Dark Sky for Android is shutting down after Apple’s acquisition

Weather IconDak Sky is a weather service, like AccuWeather or our official local Slovak SHMU. As you may notice in your weather app (if multiple sources are supported) or on services’ websites, weather forecasts are slightly different. It’s on you to find the right one. I’m using CARROT Weather with optionally downloaded data from the Dark Sky for weather alerts, like storms. Dark Sky was in March 2020 acquired by Apple and Dark Sky’s developers said it will be discontinued. The date was set on July 1, 2020, but it was delayed by one month. What does it mean for Android users, especially for paid subscribers?

As for Android users, app is no longer available. Subscribers will get full refund. API will work through the end of 2021, but no new API signups are being accepted. Though originally was said that Dark Sky will shut down weather forecasts, maps, and embeds available on its website on August 1, but it was changed and developers said that Dark Sky website will continue to work for the time being.

Acquisition of Dark Sky by Apple is not the only acquisition made by Apple. Apple purchased many companies for its services, like Beats Electronics, LLC. Later, Apple introduced its own music streaming service called simple Apple Music.
