Apple updated macOS, iOS and tvOS

Apple UpdatesApple’s March keynote at the Steve Jobs Theater was focused on multimedia services, introducing Apple News+, Apple Card, iOS game service Apple Arcade and Apple TV+. After keynote, macOS, iOS and tvOS got update. Let’s look what’s new, just don’t forget to backup your important data on safe place(s), like NAS, external disk or cloud service before you update your device(s)!

Let’s start with macOS Mojave. This update brings support for Apple News+ subscription service and also brings Apple News service to Canada, in both English and French languages. As for Safari, AutoFill can be protected by Touch ID on supported Macs. Also, if webpage supports dark appearance, Safari will automatically turn it on while Dark Mode from Mojave is active.

The macOS Mojave 10.14.4 update adds support for Apple News+, includes bug fixes and improvements, improves the stability and reliability of your Mac, and is recommended for all users.

Apple News+:

  • Apple News+ is a new subscription service that extends to the Apple News experience with hundreds of magazines and top newspapers
  • Our editors handpick top articles and magazine issues, and you also get personalized recommendations on the topics most interesting to you
  • Automatic downloads make it easy to read magazine issues offline
  • Apple News is now available in Canada, with a free experience that includes handpicked Top Stories, a personalized Today feed, and support for both English and French
  • Apple News+ is available in the U.S. and Canada, with dozens of additional Canadian Magazines

Safari:

  • Adds Dark Mode support for websites that support custom color schemes
  • Streamlines website login when filling credentials with Password Autofill
  • Allows push notification prompts only after interacting with a website
  • Adds a warning when an insecure webpage is loaded
  • Removes support for the expired Do Not Track standard to prevent potential use as a fingerprinting variable; Intelligent Tracking Prevention now protects against cross-site tracking by default

iTunes:

  • Shows more editorial highlights on a single page in the Browse tab, making it easier to find new music, playlists, and more in Apple Music

AirPods:

  • Adds support for new AirPods (2nd Generation)

More:

  • Supports Air Quality index in Maps for US, UK, and India
  • Improves the quality of audio recordings in Messages
  • Supports real-time text (RTT for phone calls made through a nearby iPhone on Mac
  • Provides enhanced support for external GPUs in Activity Monitor
  • Fixes an App Store issue that may have prevented adoption of the latest versions of Pages, Keynote, Numbers, iMovie, and GarageBand
  • Improves the reliability of USB audio devices when used with the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini models introduced in 2018
  • Corrects the default screen brightness for MacBook Air (Fall 2018)
  • Fixes a graphics compatibility issue that may occur on some external displays connected to a Mac mini (2018)
  • Resolves Wi-Fi connection issues that may occur after upgrading to macOS Mojave
  • Fixes an issue where re-adding an Exchange account may cause it to disappear from Internet Accounts
  • Fixes an issue where AOL passwords may be frequently requested in Mail

To update macOS Mojave, go to “Software Update” section of System Preferences.

Now iOS. In this update Apple added support for Apple News+ subscription service. As in macOS, Apple News+ for iOS is also available in Canada in both English and French language. Classic Apple News (without “+”) is available in the USA, the UK and in the Australia and from now in Canada too.

If you are enjoying funny Animoji, this update added four new animals – boar, shark, giraffe and owl.

If you are AirPlay 2 or HomeKit user (or both), these services will be introduced on 3rd-party TVs from companies like LG, Sony and Samsung later this year. Also, Home app was granted TV access and on iPhone, a redesigned TV remote in Control Center was redesigned to benefit from larger space and it has darker color. New feature called “Allow TV Access” shows you who can access and send content to your TV.

Siri was updateds too. When you pair your iPhone with tvOS 12.2 on your Apple TV, you can ask Siri to play specific TV shows, movies and music on devices like 3r-party TV sets and mentioned Apple TV.

Wallet app design was updated with support for upcoming Apple credit card available through a partnership with Goldman Sachs. This card will support unique Wallet features like rewards tracking, access to balance management tools, notifications about spending habits, and options to set spending limits.

There also some other new, useful features. Audio messages in Messages app use new Opus codec to provide higher quality, in Safari there are now search arrows for getting targeted search results more quickly when conducting a Google search. Like in Chrome from Google, all websites without HTTPS are marked as “Not Secure” in the Safari menu bar. And in the Apple Maps, there is a new Air Quality setting.

Safari also improves your privacy. Intelligent Tracking Prevention was improved and support for Do Not Track was removed, because it could be used for more accurate digital fingerprinting. Also, new toggle is available in Privacy & Security settings. When activated, websites can display content that relies on data from the accelerometer and gyroscope.

“About” screen was updated to more logically display relevant infos and now you can check warranty information directly on your iOS device.

If you have Logitech Crayon stylus, an alternative to Apple Pencil stylus introduced with budget 2018 iPad, then you will be able to use it on all iPads Pro, so if you have budget iPad with stylus from Logitech, you don’t have to buy another stylus for your iPad Pro.

Siri:

  • Ask Siri on your iPhone or iPad to play any video, show, movie, sports game, or channel on Apple TV. For example, “Hey Siri, play Free Solo on my TV”

Animoji:

  • Four new Animoji—owl, boar, giraffe and shark—are included for iPhone X and later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation) and iPad Pro 11-inch

AirPlay:

  • Dedicated TV controls in Control Center and on the Lock Screen give you quick access to TV controls
  • AirPlay multitasking for video allows you to browse other apps, as well as play other short form audio and video files locally on your device without interrupting AirPlay
  • AirPlay destinations are now grouped by content type making it faster for you to find what device you want to play to

Apple Pay:

  • Apple Pay Cash customers can now transfer money to their bank accounts instantly using their Visa debit cards
  • Wallet app now conveniently displays Apple Pay credit and debit transactions right below the card

Screen Time:

  • Downtime can be configured with a different schedule for each day of the week
  • A new toggle enables easily turning app limits on or off temporarily

Safari:

  • Website sign-in now occurs automatically after filling credentials with Password AutoFill
  • Warnings now appear when loading unencrypted webpages
  • Removes support for the expired Do Not Track standard to prevent potential use as a fingerprinting variable; Intelligent Tracking Prevention now protects against cross-site tracking by default
  • Smart Search Field queries can now be modified by tapping the arrow icon next to search suggestions

Apple Music:

  • The Browse tab shows more editorial highlights on a single page making it easier to discover new music, playlists, and more

AirPods:

  • Support for new AirPods (2nd generation)

This update also includes other improvements and bug fixes. This update:

  • Supports Air Quality Index in Maps for US, UK, and India
  • Includes information in Settings on how much time remains on your device’s warranty period
  • Supports real-time text (RTT) for phone calls made through a nearby iPhone on iPad and iPod Touch
  • Displays a “5G E” icon for iPhone 8 and later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation) or iPad Pro 11-inch indicating that users are in an area where AT&T’s 5G Evolution network is available
  • Improves quality of audio recordings in Messages
  • Improves stability and performance of Apple TV Remote on iOS
  • Fixes an issue that prevented some missed calls from appearing in Notification Center
  • Addresses an issue where a badge notification could appear on Settings even though no action is needed
  • Addresses an issue in Settings > General > iPhone Storage where the storage size of some large apps, the System category, and the Other category in the storage bar graph could be incorrect
  • Fixes an issue that could cause Voice Memos to automatically play back recordings after connecting to a car Bluetooth device
  • Resolves an issue that could cause Voice Memos to temporarily prevent renaming a recording

iOS update can be installed over-the-air via Settings -> General -> Software Update.

tvOS was updated too. New tvOS version for 4th-generation and 5th-generation Apple TVs supports asking a Siri to play specific media on an Apple TV from an iOS device with support for music, TV shows and movies. No new notable features were found and Apple did not release any release notes.

To update tvOS, go to System -> Software Update.
