Boot Camp AssistantSince Apple switched from PowerPC architecture in 2006 to Intel’s processors, we got option to install MS Windows on our Macs. Not all software or games are available for OS X. You can use Windows via virtualization, but in this case you won’t get full performance. I was personally using Windows on my Mac for gaming. But since my games were available for OS X, thanks to Steam, I decided to remove Windows partition. But how to remove Windows partion?

If you want to merge your Windows partition with your OS X partition, follow these steps:

  • 1. Start up your Mac in OS X
  • 2. Quit all open apps and log out any other users
  • 3. Open Boot Camp Assistant, then click Continue
  • 4. Select “Remove Windows 7 or later version,” then click Continue

Now, you have got single internal disk or multiple internal disks?

  • If your Mac has a single internal disk, click Restore
  • If your Mac has multiple internal disks, select the Windows disk, select “Restore disk to a single OS X partition,” then click Continue

If you want to keep partition and only erase it, follow these steps:

  • 1. Run Disk Utility
  • 2. Choose your Windows partition
  • 3. Click on Erase

If you are unsure which File System use on your new formatted partition, read this (click here) article. I know it’s about external disks, but File Systems descriptions apply for all disks.

Note: if you want to reinstall Windows, merge your Windows partition with your OS X partition, then reinstall Windows again via Boot Camp Assistant as before. And don’t forget, that after removing partition via Disk Utility there is no safe way to merge it with OS X partition again! Before any manipulations with partitions we strongly recommend to backup all your important files.
