Participants were to be a one-hour (from 20.00 to 21.00 local time), turn off all the lights, thereby demonstrating the need to save energy to reduce air pollution. The main objective of the action was to attract public attention to the problems of climate change and crowding in the atmosphere of greenhouse gases.

The initiative of the World Wildlife Fund supported thousands of organizations and millions of ordinary citizens of dozens of countries around the world. The mere hour of light disconnection may not significantly improve the environment. However, according to organizers, action should bring the citizens of the world to understand that saving electricity, ultimately, will reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere of Earth.

In equities World Wildlife Fund was attended by many well-known companies. For example, the search giant Google in support of the "potushil light" on its Web site, changed the color fills homepage search engine with a white to black. By the way, Google, along with other major companies, such as Intel, Dell, EDS, HP, IBM, Lenovo and Microsoft, has been involved in the project Climate Savers Computing Initiative, the main objective of which is to improve the energy efficiency of personal computers and servers. It is expected that the program Climate Savers Computing Initiative will allow, by 2010, reduce energy consumption by 50% of computers.
